Cathedral Windows Pillow Tutorial

Cathedral Windows Pillow Tutorial

Supplies: *to make an 18" square pillow
1 yard solid fabric
3/4 yd border and backing fabric
18- different 3 1/4" squares for windows (great for scraps)
9-5 1/4" inner squares (peak-a-boo option, I did not do this in the tutorial, but look here for instructions to do it)
18" pillow form

Directions:
1. From solid fabric cut:
 9-10 1/2" squares

2. From border/backing fabric cut:
2-18 1/2" X 22" pieces
2-2" X 15 1/4" pieces
2-2" X 18 1/2" pieces

3.After cutting, then follow the Cathedral Windows Basics Tutorial HERE using the size requirements listed below:
*Size Requirements for Cathedral Windows Pillow:
10 1/2"solid squares
3 1/4" window squares
5 1/4" inner squares (optional and not featured in the CW pillow photos)
Pillow will be like a nine patch instead of a four patch. See photo

Borders:
1. Sew a 2" X 15 1/4" border strip to each side of the CW block. Press towards borders.

2. Sew a 2" X 18 1/2" border strip to the top and bottom of CW block. Press towards borders.

Pillow Backing:
1. With wrong sides together fold each of the 18 1/2" X 22" rectangles in half crosswise to make 2- 11" X 18 1/2" pillow back pieces.

2.   With the CW pillow front facing up, overlap the 2 pillow back pieces so they measure 18 1/2" square with the folds in the center.   Pin and stitch all the way around using a 1/4" seam allowance.

*Backstitch at the folds to make pillow more secure when inserting form.

Turn pillow right side out and insert pillow form!  Your pillow is finished!

Here are some photos of my Cathedral Windows Pillows! I can't wait to see yours!

Please join my Flickr Group so that you can upload any photos along the way too! This is going to be so fun, I am beyond excited!

We will start next Monday, April 2, 2012.
Now grab a button and tell all of your friends!

There may even be a few prizes along the way! *wink wink* More on that to come later as well as supplies!

Quilt Market

This is a little late....but better late than never!!  Here are some photos from Houston Quilt Market!  I'm going to do two posts so there won't be like 30 photos all on one post!

First off here are some photos from Amy Butler's Booth!

Amy Butler and my pregnant self!  All that walking around all day made me feel SUPER pregnant!

Lark fabrics

Those pillows are awesome (Honey Bun Poufs) and gorgeous bags!

Her new line Lark, to me, has a very beachy vibe to it!

Next up, Anna Maria Horner's Booth!

Anna Maria and I!  Her due date with her first child is my exact due date, how crazy is that?!

Pretty embroidery

This quilt was awesome, it's hard to tell in the photo but all of the yellow are different folds (this photo is for you Jess!)

Her AWESOME couch....I want this at my house please!

I can't remember what booth this elephant was in, but he sure is cute!

Some fun pincushions!!

On to post two.....with pretty quilts!

MMM Swap

I participated in the Make Mine Modern Swap again!!  Today was the deadline to send and I made it just in time!  I highly recommend participating in this swap, it's always super fun and inspiring!
Here is what I made for my partner!  She hasn't received it yet so I can't say too much about it because I don't want to give it away!   I forgot to take a photo of all the goodies so hopefully she will when she gets them!  I made her this pillow that was inspired by a quilt made by the amazing Tula Pink!!  What do ya'll think??

Rip Rip Rip Challenge

Two meetings ago at the STLMQG we were presented with the Rip, Rip, Rip Challenge.

Here were the official rules: You must make something (quilt, table runner, market bag, etc) that is bigger then a placement using 4 of the 5 fabrics that you received during the Ripping game. You can add any additional fabrics that you choose, just make sure that each of the 4 fabrics are clearly represented somewhere in the project. You may be asked to point them out, so be prepared. The finished item must be brought to the August 13th meeting, in order for you to be eligible for any prizes.
Think creatively and have fun!!

This was a super fun challenge and here is what I came up with!  I started with least lovely fabrics:

I brought the dots on the left and came home with the rest!

Here is what I came up with:

A cathedral windows pillow!!!  I used all 5 of the fabrics I received plus I added the white solid to tone it down a bit and really love how this pillow turned out!!  What do ya'll think?
Here is the back of the pillow!!

Man, does it feel good to be sewing again!!! YEAH!!

Gumdrop Pillows and a NEW Shelf!

First up, a local video store was closing and I saw a sign on the window saying shelves for sale.  I called them this afternoon and picked one up!! For $15 I got this awesome 7 X 4 foot shelf!! It used to hold DVDs on it and now it's my fabric storage!!! SCORE!!!  After spending all day organizing my sewing room I still have lots to do!  I will post photos soon after I'm done re-organizing that room!

Yesterday, I made a couple of Amy Butler's Gumdrop Pillows!! I've had this pattern for a few years and finally got around to making them!  I absolutely love this pattern; it was super easy and a quick project! I see many more of these in my future!  (Maybe even a few for a certain photographer that I know) ;)
I made these Gumdrop Pillows from Amy Butler's recent Soul Blossoms line!  Let me know what ya'll think!

Baby Quilt and A Class!

I showed ya'll a sneak peak of the applique on this quilt a few days ago and now it's finished and on it's way to it's owner!! I really love how this quilt turned out!! Super cute and really fun!! I hope little Jackson likes it!

I used this cute paw print for the back since the little guy's nursery is puppy dog themed!

Next up, I realized that I never showed ya'll the pillows I made for my mother-in-law for Christmas! I love Cathedral Windows...lots of work but totally worth it!!  If you live in the Houston, TX area and are interested in learning this technique....I'm teaching a class at SunFlower Quilts on February 19th, 2011 from 1pm-4pm!   Be sure to go and sign up before the class gets full!  Hope to see you there!
