As a relatively new quilter, I am trying to pick a new skill to work on with each new quilt (for example, my last quilt was full of half-square triangles, which were new to me). So I choose a skill I want to focus on and then find a pattern that includes that skill and that inspires me!

Jeana said...

I like lots of pictures!

Alice said...

I look for multiple sizes...from wall hanging to king size..in a a pattern. Also, in the fabric descriptors I like to see the color shown in the pattern as well as the value of that color so I can pick my own fabric combos. After all dark green could mean anything from a saturated lime to an almost black forest green.

Anonymous said...

If I'm buying a pattern, I want it to tell me how to do something I couldn't have figured out from just looking at the quilt. And detailed easy to follow instructions!

I like patterns that lend themselves to different sizes and that tell you the fabric requirements without first having to purchase the pattern.

The first thing I look for in a pattern is one I like, then one that looks like I might be able to make it. Thanks for the opportunity to win your giveaway.

I look for something that not only suits my style, but something that has clean, we'll sewn and professional looking pictures of the example. Usually the product and pictures are presented in a professional manner, the pattern is too!

Beautiful colors, thanks for the opportunity!

In looking at patterns, I want something that has clear instructions (assume I don't know anything) and that has good photos/graphics to accompany the text.

Also, and this should go without saying, the math and measurements need to be correct! My sister got a pattern recently and the math on it is just wrong! My mom (an experienced quilter of many years) and I both checked it and it just doesn't add up. The two of us had to sit down and re-do all of the math to make it work. My poor sister had to scrap the two squares she had already done and this was her first quilting attempt.

I don't buy a pattern unless it "jumps out" at me. Those that do that are always special, and I have to take the time to decide whether it's in my area of expertise. No sense in buying a pattern unless I'll be able to put it together, right?!

Thanks! In a pattern, I look for good instructions and something that I can't easily figure out on my own. There are a lot of patterns out there right now that I can draft a block for pretty easily so I'd rather save my pennies to buy a pattern that has a less obvious construction method.

I look for the unusual or something very bold.

I look for detailed explanations in layman's terms. So, I can understand everything. Assume I have never done any of it before. Explain it like I'm a six year old. For quilting, I like a pattern that gives measurements and fabric amounts for ALL sizes (if the pattern is suited to a King then give the measurements).

I like a PDF pattern ... and it needs to be clear, I'm a novice. I like clear fabric requirements so i can see what i am getting into

Sasha said...

I like quick easy patterns. Often the ones i buy i could easily figure out myself just from seeing the final product but i buy them as it's not my idea if you see what i mean. I love lots of photos. If it's a difficult pattern I would only buy it to be part of a sew a long so i knew there would be some support if i got stuck and also someone to push me along.

Mary Beth said...

I look for something unique and with enough complication that it will teach me something.

Sarah said...

At the moment I look for simplicity and good instructions, because I'm very new to quilting. Thanks for the chance to win!

Jill said...

Thanks for the chance to win! I rarely buy patterns, I like to figure stuff out, that's half the fun for me. But I do occasionally buy patterns for bags or things that look pretty complicated, and look like I couldn't figure it out.

Connie Kresin Campbell said...

I look for detailed instructions and photos!

Meghan said...

I look for good pictures in a pattern- they can be very helpful!

JustPam said...

When I buy a pattern, I want it to be something that is a little more complicated than one I would make without a pattern

Sis-O said...

I want the systematic details. I prefer if the person providing the pattern has already tried it and figured out the glitches.

claudia said...

I like patterns that are do not require any special tools, yet are unique, I do not like curves!

Kate said...

When I buy a quilt pattern, I look for size options. If a pattern is meant to be used with precuts, I won't but it if it doesn't clearly say the number of precut pieces I need. Value notes are also appreciated. Thanks for the generous giveaway! akmajor(at)gmail(dot)com

Ramona said...

I usually look for something a little different in a style I like.

Tamara said...

I look for patterns with clear instructions and not a bunch of extra steps.

Lisa E said...

When I buy a quilt pattern, I look for a modern design. I like negative space so that helps. I also like something that's relatively straightforward to piece.

Lisa in Port Hope said...

I look for something I can add my own spin to...using a different variety of colors, or switching up the border. Plus it has to have HST's. Squares are so boring.

Bethany said...

to be honest with a pattern it needs to not simple. I can do most patterns without needing the pattern. I know that I am not like most people, but if it is more complicated then a simple a-line dress with a different applique on it, then I will think of purchasing it...does that make sense?

Anonymous said...

I normally have someone in mind when i make a quilt. So i find the fabric that fits the person and then look for a patterns that I can finsh in that time

I really like seeing patterns showing the quilt or item in different fabrics, so I have a better idea of how it can be customized. Thank you for the chance to win!

I am starting to realize I like more concise wording. I love many of the tutorials I have used online, however, reading through some patterns, they seem so roundabout in getting the directions out. I can't quite explain it--but I am working on one now that seems like it could be written better.
