I look for something that builds a new skill or offers a new way to combine colors or patterns. Or just something that looks pretty!

I usually pick fabric first and then look for patterns to go with it.

I look for something simple but cute. I sew for some clothes for my children, so I appreciate something that looks very finished when done. (It doesn't scream, "Mom, made this!")

When purchase a pattern, it must be a quilt design that "resonates" with me (sounds like a politician doesn't it). It's more emotional than logical. This means that the photos of the quilt cover must be exceptionally good to catch my attention.

Rafael's Mum said... 15

It's got to 'speak' to me. Sometimes unexpected fabric jumps out!

Bethany (Make Me A Quilt) said... 16

I am only a quilter, and I never buy patterns because I really enjoy the creation process of figuring everything out myself. :)

♥Duff said... 17

hmm...first I look at price--if it's $9 for a pdf pattern (I have to use my paper, printer, and ink to print it out) then I don't go any farther. Really! (A group of gals just had this conversation) I think that's terrible! After that I look at how versatile (colors) and easy the pattern will be for multiple recipients.

You know, I don't really think of anything in particular. It's usually a matter of seeing something that strikes my fancy. Often I find myself with some terrific fabric & then I try to find a pattern to go with it. But I don't know that there's anything specific I look for... xo

Jennie P. said... 44

I look for ease of use.

audrey said... 45

I just have to like the pattern. If it uses precuts all the better! I hate the cutting part so the less cutting the more I like it!

audrey said... 46

Steph Jacobson said... 47

I like more modern quilts but nothing that's too intricate. I want to be able to piece the top in one or two sewing sessions. And it has to be available in crib size or smaller--I'm not a fan of quilting anything bigger than that!

Lynn said... 48

I look for a pattern without a ton of matching seams (I love wonky!)

I also like patterns that use precuts.

Jamie said... 49

I look for a pattern that is cute but also simple to do. Something that's not too complicated or "busy" but simple and beautiful!

Lindsey said... 67

I look for something modern - but not something I could easily come up with on my own.

Kimberly said... 68

If I am buying a pattern I love lot of pictures or very clear drawings. It can really help clarify a step I might be confused on. Thanks for the giveaway!

Lindsay said... 69

I have never bought a pattern! I always just try to figure things out... but there are a few cute things that I need to buy the patterns for! thanks for the giveaway!

Patti said... 70

Can hardly wait to see the new Kona colours! I love patterns that challenge me to try something new! Thanks for the giveaway.

Victoria said... 71

I don't buy many quilt patterns because part of the joy of quilting, for me, is seeing where a project will go if I let it. The one time I was excited about a pattern I was disappointed to see amateurish drawings and hard to read directions. I would have preferred photographs and a good fclean font to read with some white space to be able to distinguish the different steps.

Victoria said... 72

I ddon't use many patterns but I like clear photos and white space and a crisp font for directions.

rachael {imagine gnats} said... 73

trillium said... 74

I look for a simple pattern -simple triangles or just blocks or strips, because I am not that experienced.

trilliumcreates AT gmail DOT com

Isisjem said... 75

I look for simple patterns that clearly state up front how much fabric is required and it's even better if it states you could use two charm packs and two yards of xxx fat quarters so you can see if you already have enough fabric. I also like to know the finished sized and which pre cut batting and backing material requirements I need. Oh it's also good if one pattern has instructions to size up or down easily. I don't have the capacity to do huge quilts both in terms of basting or quilting. So one quilt that comes in a range of sizes is good.

Cynthia said... 92

As a new-bee quilter, I'm open to many designs...they're practically all new to me! After making a Jacob's Ladder quilt top, I now lean toward designs that have fewer small pieces in the block.

Lisa England said... 94

When buying quilt patterns I look for something original -- not just old blocks with new fabrics. I'm also a sucker for cute baby quilts. I seldom sew clothes any more.

Kirsty said... 95

I look for the measurements! When I see a pattern or quilt I like I know I could probably study it and work out how it is done, but who has time! There's also usually a great trick/tip included with the pattern so its a win/win.

Aunt Marti said... 96

When considering buying a new pattern, it's important that the writer follows standard industry conventions -- such as listing block size raw-edge-to-raw-edge. A poorly written pattern gets put back on the rack!

Anonymous said... 97

I look for straight sewing lines (no curves or circles please) and efficency when it comes to cutting.
